An excerpt from At Home in Wisconsin’s Grouse Woods…It is one thing to read of the thick, tangled coverts that ruffed grouse call home and the difficulty this cover makes for gunning after the famed game bird; it is quite another thing to experience the north woods firsthand.

My introduction to the grouse woods came during a multi-day trip to northwestern Wisconsin that spanned the end of September and the first days of October. As a hunter used to covering swaths of wide open prairie in search of pheasants and prairie grouse, it was an experience akin to exploring a new world.
