Finding the Right Cover Dog for You

Lily, American Brittany, Pointing Woodcock in Northern Mi

Whether you are looking to purchase a pup or a finished dog, Buy and Sell Hunting Dogs is the place to start. If you are a breeder who specializes in the rewarding work of training the ultimate cover dog, this is the place you want people to find your pups!

It’s that time of year again! Leaves turning bright yellow,  orange and red. Short sleeves are replaced with sweat shirts or jackets. Boots are gotten out in case there are puddles in the woods. You are driving down a two track and your dog is whining to get started. Your best friend is about to surprise you with the spot he had just seen  20 woodcock two days before. This type of foreplay is what all cover dog enthusiasts long for each fall hunting season.

As you are loading up your vest with yellow 20 guage shells, you realize what a lucky guy you genuinely are. You remember when your 5 year cover dog expert was just a pup on a lead learning to point. You remember how patient his mentors were with his puppy impatience. You remember how kind your hunting buddies were when your pup was still making adolescent mistakes. You realize that some of those same mistakes may materialize again today, because no living thing is 100 percent absolute. Just like you miss birds with 3/4 oz of 7 1/2 ‘s on a regular basis, your dog may occasionally bump birds or range a little too far in her excitement for the hunt. You learn to live with it, because this is the life you yearn for 10 months of the year.

The thing that will put the smile on you face today won’t be because you got your 3 bird limit. It will be the excitement of seeing that tail wag before it goes solid. The adrenaline rush you get walking up to the point. I have to make a snap decision on which way to approach the bird. Do I come in from behind or make a circle and come in from the front? You get more joy out of seeing your best friends nail the bird in mid flight than shooting it yourself. You are out there for selfish reasons – it makes you feel like a million bucks when your dog and buddies are successful. Life is short; shared experiences are always the most meaningful; that is what cover dogs create – MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCES!

It is isn’t about the final shot. it’s about the entire process. Ah, but that is another article ail in itself.  If you are looking for a cover dog check out Buyandsellhuntingdogs.com
